RAW EARTH

Although raw earth architecture has such an ancient tradition and is widely spread all over the world, today there are many prejudices against this construction system. It is said that raw earth buildings are not resistant, that they are outdated or that they are technically backward. Only recently, ecologically motivated architects and building builders have rediscovered this traditional construction system. The main advantages of the "raw earth" construction system can be summarized as follows:

• minimal use of fossil fuels;

• reduction of CO emissions;

• reductions in emissions of pollutants (SO, NO, HF); • optimal indoor climate, thanks to a high mass and a high ability to regulate humidity;

• full recyclability;

In the world there are more than twenty traditional techniques based on the use of raw earth for the construction of buildings; however these techniques can be grouped into two main types:

The "wet" techniques: the use of earth / clay / beaten clay formed on site with the use of formworks and water.

The "dry" techniques: the use of uncooked clay bricks produced off-site, industrially, and assembled on site.
